Some of the pin cushions are made for a "special" reason, or person, and I might not make duplicates of them. This one is for Princess Aeschine, since her reign theme was "BEES"
Cute cute cute! I've loved every one you've posted photos of. YOU are the one that makes these out of soda bottle caps! I was going to do some of these once upon a time, but never got beyond collecting bottle caps.
No, I am not the original designer and I cannot take credit for the original idea; I saw them on a FLickR site last year (now cannot find the site), but thought it was a neat idea, I never got back to them until recently.
Now that I am all caught up on my Kingdom Service Projects, I started making them as a quick project between my other projects.
Aside from the Laurel leaves, Crowns, and ones for special gifts, I figured that these would be easy gifts for the Queen' Treasure Chest.
But, isn't this how we come up with ideas? We see something someone else did and try our own version of it. Now I just need to get more bottle caps...*S*
I coulda sworn it was your stuff I tripped over a few years back. Well, whether THAT was you or not, yours are adorable.I think making them for gifts is a great idea. I think I may follow your example and make some for 12th Night gifts this year. I love the crown, and the bee hive is so cute.
Thank you. If you need directions, let me know; I made some up for a possible class. The basic ones take about 20-30 minutes, depending on your sewing skills. The crown takes longer of course...*S^
The crowns are for a couple Royals and the bee hive is for Her Highness Aeschine (Cynagua) as her reign theme was "bees". I am also making a cheese wedge & mouse as she is also head of the Cheese Maker's Guild.
I would LOVE directions please! I'm assuming they are e-mail-able? houndofzeus@pacbell.net
Ya know Sorcha, even if this is not your brain child, these pin cushions really are adorable, and very do-able, small projects. Would you consider sending something to the TI?
Yes, I have them in Word format. Let me recheck the instructions to be sure I did not forget anything (as my 1st drafts are basicially my own notes/steps). Then I will sent them to you. I still have your email on file from years ago (re: metal casting & you made me a gorget).
I never thought about it as an article, but it might be do-able. I thought TI (and Complete Anachronist) needed articles on period techniques only?
It is definitely preferable, yes, but there have been plenty of more or less "period effect with modern method/materials" topics written about. True, I don't know if anything similar to these pincushions existed in our period of history. It would never hurt to send a query to Dori and see if she would be interested. Heck, the worst she'd say is no, right?
Small pin cushions (scissor fobs) were period, yes, but not using bottle caps.. LOL Wool was used for stuffing (pollyfill and emery powder is a modern fill).
Hey- if they can publish articles on using pickle barrel plastic to simulate Japanese armor, why not pin cushions made from bottle caps that don't show? We hard-core folks can use leather as a stiff backing...
LOL.. never thought of that (pickle barrel article). Hmmm.. one inch leather disks 1/4" thick would work also, but the bottle caps are cheaper (and easier to come by)..LOL
Will need to make pin cushion using leather disk to see if it would be a easy as with the bottle cap. Great idea, thanks.
